Allison Medlin
Track and Cross Country
Allison Medlin, daughter of Lew and Cynthia Medlin, was born in Springfield, Missouri on November 19, 1979. Growing up in Carthage, Allison became one of the top age group runners in the country, winning several AAU track and field and cross country championships, both as an individual and as a member of a relay or cross country team. At just 16 years old, she earned a gold medal at the AAU/USA Youth Cross Country National Championship.
During her time at Carthage High School, Allison was a three-time state cross country medalist, finishing 3rd in 1994 and 1996. In 1995, she dominated the girls high school season. After placing 2nd in the first meet of the year, she won the remaining 8 meets before State, including District and Sectional, and then she won the state championship, the only cross country runner from Carthage ever to do so, running the 3rd fastest time in state history.
Additionally, she was a member of two teams that earned state trophies, a 3rd place finish in 1994 and a 2nd place finish in 1996. Carthage Coach Andy Youngworth pointed out, “she was faster than all the boys!” Allison was a national qualifier for the Foot Locker National Cross Country Meet in 1996, one of just 32 girls from around the nation to compete in San Diego. She finished 22nd in the nation.
Allison was also a three-time state individual medalist in track and field, and two-time 4×800 meter relay medalist in 1995 and 1996. As a freshman in 1995, she placed 2nd at State in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and she also placed 2nd in the 3200 in 1996. To this day, she holds the Carthage Lady Tigers school records in the 3200 meter individual run and 4×800 meter relay. Due to injuries, her high school career was cut short, but she continued her running career later at the University of Arkansas. At Arkansas, she competed in both cross country and track and field all four years. During her time at Arkansas, the team won multiple SEC championships in indoor, outdoor and cross country, and finished as high as 2nd at the NCAA Division 1 National Championships. Allison was named to the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years at Arkansas.
Allison was a Chancellor’s Scholar at the University of Arkansas. She graduated Arkansas magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree and went on to earn a master’s degree. She attended AUC Medical School and completed her residency at St. John’s Medical Center in Detroit, where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Allison Medlin is now a Board-Certified Family Physician living in Kansas City. Her parents still reside in Carthage.
