Gregory Warren Kyte

Multi-Sport Athlete

   Gregory Warren Kyte, son of Roger “Warren” Kyte and JoAnna “Jody” (née Dyer) Kyte, was born in Carthage on November 16, 1958. Greg attended LaGrange Country School, Carthage Jr. High,and Carthage High School, graduating in 1977. Greg married Mary (née Craig) Kyte on May 5, 1978.

   Greg’s love of sports and excellence in athletics started as a young boy. He began in youth baseball, alongside his brothers and under the coaching of his father. As a Little Leaguer, he played on two Missouri Little League State Championship Teams in 1970 and 1971, both lead by Clarence Kester. Greg was a standout three-sport athlete at Carthage High School, lettering in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. His Class of 1977 won Big 13 Conference Championships in all 3 sports.

   Throughout his life, Greg has remained involved with Carthage High School and athletics. He served as a Board Member of the Carthage R9 Foundation for 9 years and co-founded the Carthage Tiger Alumni Football Game. He received the Do The Right Thing Award from the Carthage R9 School Board for his service to the R9 Foundation. Greg also served as President of the Carthage High School Booster Club.

   Greg played Men’s Major League Softball for 8 years with DJ Sports and the St. Louis Merchants. He earned All American Honors at the 1990 National Softball Association World Series.

   Later in life, Greg took up golfing. He was a member of the Long Drivers of America for 8 years. Greg won regional golf championships in St. Louis, Mansfield, OH, and Springdale, AR. He was ranked in the Top 25 in the world in the Senior Division for 6 years. Greg’s best finish was 6th in the 2005 World Finals in Mesquite, NV.

   Greg has also coached and officiated several sports. He coached Little League Baseball and PeeWee Football for many years. He also served as President of the Carthage PeeWee Football Organization. Greg was a Powerlifting Coach and Referee for 10 years. He coached two National Powerlifting Champions, including his son Craig. Greg served as a MSHSAA Football Official for 17 years, proudly working the 2007 and 2012 Missouri State Finals. He currently serves as a Football Observer for MSHSAA.

   Life-long Carthaginians and supporters of the community, Greg and Mary still live on the family farm northeast of Carthage. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Greg can still be found at many games watching his son Craig coach and his grandchildren compete.
